The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative

The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative consists of a group of thirty-three energy infrastructure operators, united through a shared vision of a climate-neutral Europe enabled by a thriving renewable and low-carbon hydrogen market.

Mission

The EHB initiative aims to accelerate Europe’s decarbonisation journey by defining the critical role of hydrogen infrastructure – based on existing and new pipelines – in enabling the development of a competitive, liquid, pan-European renewable and low-carbon hydrogen market.

The initiative seeks to foster market competition, security of supply, security of demand, and cross-border collaboration between European countries and their neighbours.

Partners

Participating companies include Amber Grid, Bulgartransgaz, Conexus, CREOS, DESFA, Elering, Enagás, Energinet, Eustream, FGSZ, FluxSwiss, Fluxys Belgium, Gas Connect Austria, GASCADE, Gasgrid Finland, Gassco, Gasunie, Gas Networks Ireland, GRTgaz, National Gas Transmission, NET4GAS, Nordion Energi, OGE, ONTRAS, Plinacro, Plinovodi, REN, Snam, TAG, Teréga, Transgaz, Transitgas AG and the TSO of UA.

Governance

The EHB initiative is governed through the Steering Committee, the chairwomen, and the secretariat. The Steering Committee consists of a representative of every EHB partner and is the main decision and governing body of the initiative. The chairwomen, who are also part of the Steering Committee, represent the initiative externally. Guidehouse has been involved as secretariat since the creation of the EHB initiative and in its function as secretariat is responsible for content research and communications, and coordination support.

EHB has grown as an initiative by a small amount of founding TSO partners to its current form in which near full coverage of the EU pipeline operator market is involved.
